Biology of the Chihazh System

There are three life-bearing planets and several life-bearing moons in the Chihazh system. Each of these evolved life independently. In addition, all three planets have organisms derived from the human homeworld, brought when humanity colonized the system several tens of thousands of years ago. These four groups of organisms are classified as "worlds", the highest level in the standard biological taxonomy used on modern-day Galhaf. The worlds are, in turn, subdivided into domains, kingdoms, and further subdivisions.

The "world" level was recognized only fairly recently. It had long been recognized that a small number of plants and animals had very different basic structures from other Galhafan organisms, and that they appeared rather late in the fossil record. However, they had traditionally been grouped along with the native life, arbitrarily grouped with native organisms.

The existence of these "neoanimals" and "neoplants" was considered a strong argument against evolutionary theory when the theory was first proposed, but eventually the xenogenesis theory became accepted.
